Pirates The golden age of pirates was during the 1600s and the 1700s. Pirates sailed the seas, attacking other ships and robbing whatever was on them, hoping to find treasure. They fought using guns or swords and captured or even killed the sailors of the enemy ship. Many books have been written about pirates, such as Robert Louis Stevenson's novel Treasure Island. But what were real pirates like? Were they all dirty men wearing a patch over one eye, ripped clothes and with a parrot on one shoulder?
